It was another good night for Kernel basketball as the Kernel boy’s clinched the District 3AA top seed and a share of the ESD Conference title and the Kernel girl’s ran the table and finished undefeated in the ESD Conference going 14-0 this season.  The Mitchell boy’s traveled to Aberdeen last night and scratched and clawed in the first half and led by one at the break before pulling away in the second half and the Kernel boy’s rolled to a nice 67 to 54 win.  Mitchell improved to 17-3 overall and 11-3 in the ESD with the win.  All five starters scored in double figures for Mitchell led by our Taco Johns Player of the game Matt Henriksen with 17 points.  Brady Maxwell scored 14 points and had nine rebounds, Jade Miller scored 12 points, and Tate Martin and Tucker Volesky each had 11 points.  Although he scored only two points, Seth Cavanaugh came off the bench and gave Mitchell quality minutes on both ends of the court and came away with three steals in the game.  The Kernel boy’s will host Aberdeen Central in the 1st Round of the District 3AA Tourney on Tuesday at the Corn Palace with game time set for 5:45pm.  KORN pre-game will start at 5:20pm on AM 1490 and on-line at www.1490korn.com.  Pierre will host Huron in the other District 3AA game Tuesday night.

The Mitchell Kernel girl’s accomplished something that is really tough to do, especially this season, and that is go undefeated in the ESD Conference and only lost once during the regular season.  The Kernels built a 29-point second half lead on Aberdeen Central last night and beat the Eagles 67 to 40 to end the regular season 19-1 overall and 14-0 in the ESD Conference.  Kerri Young burned the nets for 23 points followed by Macy Miller with 14 points, and Dana Misiaszek with 11 points.  Mitchell will now wait until Monday to open the District 3AA Tourney as the top seed and host Huron Monday at 5:45pm on KORN.  The pre-game will start at 5:20pm on AM 1490 and on-line at www.14190korn.com.  Aberdeen Central will host Pierre in the 1st Round on Monday night as well.

There were two great games at the Corn Palace last night in District 11B girl’s basketball as Hanson and Ethan each won close games and advanced to the District Championship game on Friday night at 8:00pm.  In the Hanson game the Beaverettes trailed by two heading into the fourth quarter but pulled it out over Avon 45 to 42 thanks in part to Ashley Robinson who scored 26 points for Hanson, 18-3 overall.  Ethan trailed for most of the game but it was the fourth quarter where the Rustlers made a run and pulled out an exciting 57 to 51 win over Scotland last night.  Darbi Gustafson scored 29 points, hauled in nine rebounds and dished out four assists for Ethan, 16-5 overall.  Ethan will play Hanson for the District 11B Championship on Friday night at 8:00pm.

The match-up everyone had been talking about will happen on Thursday night.  Parkston and Wagner will battle it out for the District 10A Championship after Parkston beat Bon Homme 61 to 50 and Wagner hammered Platte/Geddes 68 to 33 to stay undefeated on the season.  Wagner, 21-0, will host Parkston, 16-3, in the title game in Wagner Thursday with tip-off time set for 7:00pm.

Coming up tonight on the Wednesday Night Coaches Corner will be Travis Carpenter Mitchell wrestling, Wes Morgan Mitchell girl’s basketball, and two special guests this week will be Eric Hohn of the Mitchell Lady Marlin hockey team and John Lord Mitchell Marlin hockey coach.  The show starts at 6:30pm on KORN/Q107 from the Freight House Room of the Depot.  The Mitchell QB Club will also meet tonight at 7:30pm in Depot tonight as well.
